After hearing about claimid.com on the Inside the Net podcast, I decided it would be good to sign up for one myself. It lets you basically manage your online identity. They did a good job of describing the service themselves on their own site. Here’s an excerpt from the email invitation I requested:
ClaimID is a new service that lets you manage your online identity. With claimID, you can claim and present the information that is about you online. In doing so, you get to influence search engines and provide people more relevant information when they search for you. Designed to be user-friendly and intuitive, claimID is about letting you have some say in what search engines say about you.
I’m not real famous as far as search engines go. If I perform a vanity search on google, the result is a whole bunch of other Josh Harrisons. I must improve those vanity search results. However, if you search for picklewagon, the results are much more promising.
This creates an interesting dilemma. Do I want to be known as Josh Harrison or picklewagon? I would prefer Josh Harrison on picklewagon, or something like that. I guess the net will decide.
Anyway, it’s time to claim my ID on the net and take control before it gets out of hand. Once I get my page setup inside the site, I’ll share it with whomever cares. This seems like a very cool idea.
