Still No Deal Between the Satellite Providers and MWC/CSTV

This is really getting to me. We still don’t have a satellite deal between with CSTV and the Mountain West Conference. It’s not looking good either.

David James at KUTV.com thinks a deal will be in place by September 10. To be fair, he made this prediction on 8/21. I don’t think it will happen. I don’t think Craig Thompson has what it takes to put together a deal in such a short amount of time.

DJ says something in the post that I have to comment on:

But after working so hard to capture 34% of the market, do the satellite folks want to turn down Comcast’s offer and drive all the Utes and Cougars fans back to cable?

I will not go back to cable just so I can watch BYU games. Something is wrong with this. I should not have to switch providers just to watch the local college football team to play. The sad thing is is that the schools have no control over this.

Are you willing to switch providers just to watch your favorite MWC football team play?

This is capitalism at its finest. Comcast makes an exclusive deal with the MWC and they create the MTN. channel. Now if people want to watch their teams, they have to subscribe to Comcast.

Why would Comcast, part owner of the MTN. channel make a deal with Dish or DirecTV?

The answer is consumer demand or the possibility of losing consumers over not having MTN. available. Numerous amounts of BYU fans have contacted their satellite provider in an attempt to add the channel. I don’t see it happening any time soon. MTN West fans are the only ones upset about the situation. We are down on the list. I think everyone wants to see the results of the coverage this weekend before making any deals.

I can promise you one thing, I am taking a big sign to the game that says, “MTN. channel sucks!”

I support your idea for the sign, John. That channel does suck. I think that Comcast has over-estimated the draw to Mountain West football. I think a lot of people watch it casually while they’re doing other things on Saturday. Sure, there’s the folks that plan their whole day around it, and they might track it down at a friend’s house or something, but I can’t see many people switching to Comcast just to see some football games. My sisters will watch parts of the game if it’s on… at their house. But they’re not going to put forth any effort beyond that. If I miss some games, I won’t care much. The advertisers are reaching a smaller audience, the fan support of Mountain West teams will lose some momentum, and in the end, it’s just a really dumb deal.

I will certainly not give up my wonderful satellite service for Mountain West football. I would have watched the games… now I don’t really care either way. Way to go, MTN and Comcast!

    John, make the sign!

I will not be watching the Colorado/Colorado State game for the first time this year.

CSU and the MWC have done a great job distroying a great rivalry.

I will find other teams to watch in other confrences.

Go Fresno State (my adopted team)!
