Since virtually everybody was blogging at Gnomedex, I decided to just enjoy my time there and not do any blogging during the conference. I’m glad I did. Everybody posted a lot of great opinions and summaries of what happened.
Here I will post what I thought of the conference. I need to remember the things that happened and my thoughts on the people and what was said by both the speakers and fellow Gnomedexers.
Before I post summaries of the speakers and what they shared, I want to share my feelings on the conference in general.
This was my first Gnomedex and my first conference. I thought it was fun and informative. There were lots of great people that I had the chance to meet and to chat with. The food was excellent. The venues for the parties and the conference were excellent and the wifi sucked on Friday but was pretty good on Saturday. And I can’t forget to mention that Chris and Ponzi Pirillo did an excellent job. Thank you.
I liked the main theme (at least how I interpreted it): We have the technology to do a lot of good. We need to take notice of what we are doing and make a difference. We need to try to these new make technologies more accessible and help others adopt them.
Take a look at the photos that everybody has uploaded to Flickr.
The highlights on Friday for me were Darren Barefoot on building something so others can do good, hearing Guy Kawasaki speaking on the art of evanglism, and Vanessa Fox on managing your online identity. I can’t summarize the day without mentioning my thoughts on Jason Calacanis getting “Winered” by Dave Winer. It seems they have finally apologized for what happened. I must say that I agree with what Dave Winer did and appreciate what he did for everybody who was thinking the same thing. Something needed to be said and he was the one to do it. I was very disappointed when Calacanis gave us all something to look forward to in his blog and then dropped a new product on us from his new startup Mahalo.
Saturday had a different feeling to it. Mainly because of the time spent listening to Derek Miller. Derek attended the las few Gnomedexes but fell ill with cancer last year. They did an awesome job of video-conferencing him in so that he could share his story. It was one of those times that makes you stop and think… I’ll for sure be keeping up with Derek and wish him the best of luck.

Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad Chris and I could get the chat organized and working despite the usual bandwidth problems at Gnomedex. It was fun for me to do, and also (like other activities) helped me feel better. I hope it was useful for those at Gnomedex too.
WiFi… is the bane… of my existence.
